SightseeingPearl Harbor Tour
Royal Star Trans & Tours
from $79
Pearl Harbor is four separate sites — the USS Arizona Memorial, Battleship Missouri, USS Bowfin, and the Aviation Museum. The Arizona Memorial is free but requires a timed reservation through Recreation.gov, released 56 days ahead, and popular dates sell out fast. Most visitors pair the Arizona with the Missouri for four to five hours on-site, plus 30 to 45 minutes of driving each way from Waikīkī.

Pearl Harbor is the most visited site in Hawaiʻi and one of the most significant historical landmarks in the United States. Every year, roughly 1.8 million people make the drive from Waikīkī to the western shore of Oʻahu to pay their respects and learn the story of December 7, 1941. If it is on your list, you need a plan. Tickets sell out fast, security is strict, and there is more to see than most visitors realize. Here is everything we know from years of helping guests navigate the experience.
Pearl Harbor is not a single attraction. It is a collection of four distinct sites spread across the harbor, each offering a different window into the history of World War II in the Pacific. You can visit one or all four depending on your time and interest.
If you plan to visit all four, a combo ticket is available for $72 per adult, which saves you a few dollars compared to buying each separately. The Arizona Memorial reservation is handled separately since it is free.
This is the part that trips up most visitors. The USS Arizona Memorial program is free, but you need a timed reservation through Recreation.gov. There is a non-refundable $1 service fee per person. Here is how the system works.
Reservations are released exactly 56 days (8 weeks) in advance. They go live at midnight Hawaii Standard Time on the release day, and popular dates sell out within minutes. If you are visiting during peak season — roughly mid-December through March, and again in June through August — you need to be ready the moment tickets drop. Set a calendar reminder for 56 days before your planned visit date, convert to your home time zone, and be on Recreation.gov with your account already created and logged in.
If you miss the online window, there is a standby line at the Visitor Center. Arrive by 6:30 AM and join the first-come, first-served queue. Standby tickets are not guaranteed, and during busy weeks the line can be long. Some tour operators also maintain their own allocations, so a guided tour is sometimes your best backup plan when public tickets are gone.
How much time you need at Pearl Harbor depends entirely on how many sites you want to see. Here is a realistic breakdown.
Factor in drive time from Waikīkī, which is 30 to 45 minutes each way depending on traffic. Morning arrival is strongly recommended. The site is less crowded, the weather is cooler, and you will have more flexibility if your timeline shifts. Pearl Harbor opens at 7:00 AM.
Pearl Harbor is an active military base, and security reflects that. A few things to keep in mind so you are not caught off guard at the gate.
You do not need a tour to visit Pearl Harbor, but there are good reasons to consider one. Here is an honest comparison.
Our honest take: a guided tour is worth it if you could not get Arizona Memorial tickets on your own. Tour operators often have access when the public inventory is sold out. The narrated drive from Waikīkī also adds context that you would not get on your own, covering the military history of the harbor, Hickam Air Force Base, and the events leading up to the attack.
Pearl Harbor is an incredible educational experience for children, but younger kids can find the long waits and solemn atmosphere challenging. A few practical notes.
